Hey friends! So I was scrolling through Pinterest the other day (as one does when they're supposed to be making dinner), and I couldn't help but notice that "winter vacation inspo" is trending HARD right now. And why not?! There's something about this time of year that makes us all want to either burrow deep into a snowy cabin somewhere or escape to warmer climates entirely. So I thought, why not round up some of my absolute favorite winter destination ideas that have been living rent-free in my head lately? Let's dive in!
For the Snow Bunnies: Magical Mountain Retreats
1. The Cozy Cabin Experience
There's nothing quite like the magic of a snowy cabin getaway. Picture this: you're wrapped in the world's chunkiest knit blanket, warming your feet by a crackling fireplace, while snowflakes dance outside your window. Pure magic, right?
Some of my favorite spots for the authentic cabin experience:
- Jackson Hole, Wyoming – The Tetons make for the most dramatic backdrop ever, and the town itself has that perfect blend of rustic charm and upscale amenities.
- Lake Tahoe, California/Nevada – Gorgeous lake views AND snow? Sign me up.
- Stowe, Vermont – For when you want that quintessential New England winter postcard vibe.
*Design tip: If you're renting a cabin, pack a few small items to make it feel instantly homey – your favorite mug, a tiny speaker for ambiance, and a scented candle can transform someone else's space into your personal retreat.*
2. European Alpine Dreams
If you're looking to splurge a bit more, European ski villages are straight out of a fairytale. Think charming chalets, après-ski culture that puts American happy hours to shame, and views that will flood your camera roll.
On My Bucket List:
- Hallstatt, Austria – This lakeside village looks like it is literally where Disney’s Frozen would be filmed (if it wasn’t an animated movie)!
- Zermatt, Switzerland – Car-free streets, the iconic Matterhorn view, and chocolate. Need I say more?
-
Chamonix, France – Where French chic meets serious mountain adventure.
For the Sun Seekers: Warm Escapes
Listen, there's absolutely no shame in saying "no thanks" to winter weather altogether. Sometimes vitamin D deficiency is REAL, and the only prescription is a plane ticket south.
1. Tropical Beach Getaways
- Tulum, Mexico – Yes, it's become trendy, but for good reason. The perfect mix of gorgeous beaches, ancient ruins, and amazing food.
- St. Lucia – Those twin Piton mountains rising from the sea create the most dramatic backdrop for your beach lounging.
- Costa Rica's Pacific Coast – For when you want your beach time with a side of rainforest adventure.
2. Desert Retreats
Don't sleep on desert destinations in winter! The temperatures are actually pleasant (unlike the summer inferno), and there's something spiritually cleansing about all that open space.
- Joshua Tree, California – Rent a design-forward house with big windows and spend your evenings stargazing.
- Sedona, Arizona – Those red rocks against a dusting of occasional snow? Incredibly photogenic.
-
Marrakech, Morocco – If you're feeling more adventurous, the winter months are perfect for exploring this vibrant city without melting.
The Unexpected Winter Gems
These are the spots that might not immediately come to mind for winter travel but absolutely should:
1. City Escapes
- Quebec City, Canada – With its cobblestone streets and European feel, it transforms into a winter wonderland.
- Budapest, Hungary – The thermal baths are even more magical when it's cold outside, and the Christmas markets are top-notch (one of my fave!)
- Kyoto, Japan – Without the crowds of cherry blossom season, you can actually enjoy the temples dusted in occasional snow.
2. Unique Experiences
- Iceland – Winter means better chances to see the Northern Lights, plus those geothermal hot springs feel extra amazing.
- Patagonia – December through February is actually summer in this stunning region of Chile and Argentina.
- New Zealand – Another Southern Hemisphere gem that's in its prime during our winter months.
Making the Most of a Winter Staycation
Let's be real – not everyone can jet off on a moment's notice. If you're staying put this winter, here's how to capture vacation vibes at home:
1. Designate a weekend as a proper staycation – I'm talking - no errands, no checking work emails, just pure relaxation.
2. Transform your space – Move some furniture around, splurge on fresh flowers, or just clean up that corner you've been ignoring.
3. Plan special meals – Try cooking something from a destination you'd love to visit, or order from that fancy restaurant you save for special occasions.
4. Disconnect – Put your phone away (after taking some cute staycation pics for the 'gram, obviously).
5. Create a sensory experience – This is where lighting, music, and scent come into play. Nothing creates an atmosphere faster than the right combination of these elements.
Before I sign off, I have to mention one of my favorite recent discoveries for creating that perfect winter ambiance at home: Havilah & Co. candles. The Winter Collection is giving me all the cozy vibes – especially the Northern Lights & Tabak scent that somehow manages to capture the essence of a cabin fireplace after a day in the snow. Plus, they donate 50% of profits to help entrepreneurs around the world, which basically means you're sending good vacation vibes to others while planning your own. Winter win-win!
