A candle can transform your space from "lived-in" to "Instagram-ready" in minutes. But here’s the thing: just because a candle smells nice doesn’t mean it’s nice to your body.

At Havilah & Co., we believe that you shouldn’t have to compromise between having a dreamy-smelling home and knowing what’s burning in it. That’s why we put some serious thought into how we source our fragrances—so you can breathe easy, literally.

Keep reading to get the full scoop on how we source our fragrances—and why it matters.

Where Do Our Fragrances Come From?

At Havilah & Co., our fragrance journey starts long before the candle hits your nightstand. Our fragrances come from essential oils that are carefully extracted from the most aromatic parts of plants—flowers, leaves, stems, and even roots. To make sure we’re bringing you the best, we’ve partnered with a prestigious perfume house (think old-world meets eco-conscious) that follows a strict ethical code.

We start by sending these folks our scent inspirations based on the story we want to tell and the feeling we want to share. From there, our Fragrance Artist, Kristen, works her magic and turns those ideas into eco-friendly fragrance oils that are just as good for the planet as they are for your home.

In other words, our candles don’t just smell divine—they’ve got values.

What Sets Havilah’s Fragrance Sourcing Apart from Other Candle Brands?

Most mass-produced candles focus on one thing: smell. We enjoy a nice whiff of sandalwood as much as the next person. But that’s only a small part of the equation. For us, knowing exactly where our fragrances come from matters just as much.

Every fragrance we use at Havilah comes with an eco compass, which gives us the backstory—including how many generations the farm’s been around and the environmental impact of the ingredients. For instance, our sandalwood is sourced from the forests of northwest Australia using a sustainable agroforestry model. Translation: all of the wildlife—including the cute wallabies that live on the farm—stays protected.

Then there’s our Bergamot, which is sourced from a family business that’s been around for several generations. These folks are renowned in the fragrance industry and work tirelessly to protect the integrity of their orchards in Calabria and Sicily.

So, while other candles might focus on just smelling great, we focus on ethical sourcing and creating scents with stories behind them. Of course we want to make your home smell amazing; but more importantly, we want to do it in a way that’s rooted in history and sustainability.

Why What You Burn Matters

We get it: a candle that smells like a tropical getaway is tempting. But mass-produced candles often hide harmful stuff like phthalates and parabens. These are the last things you want your kids, pets, and visitors inhaling. Not to mention these toxins are known to be hormone disruptors (yikes!).

At Havilah & Co., we’ve made sure our fragrances are free from junk so you can enjoy a space that smells incredible without compromising your well-being. After all, a great-smelling home should be a no-brainer, not a health risk.
